HI

Had a bit of time so I was googling some of the Dimmock names that may or may not link to my tree - got a few hits on a Samson Dimmock [have 2 possible Sampson's/Samson's] - found a site that links to an index to registers of immigrant ships' arrivals in Queensland 1848-1912 that has a group of Dimmocks that may have a black country connection.

They are Emma [aged 45]; William [aged 13]; Harry [aged 11]; Samson [aged 9]; and Thomas [aged 7]. All arrived in Australia on the 24th August 1886 aboard the Quetta.

One has to wonder if this is the wife [Emma nee Clee formerly Tibbets] and family of Joseph Dimmock [1851-1927]. Joseph & Emma can be readily be found in the 1881 & 1901 census but I've been unable to find them in 1891. The kids names are the same but the ages vary slightly and William could be William Tibbetts from Emma's previous marriage - I know the other kids births were registered as Tibbets as Joseph & Emma didn't marry until 1878.

Ain't genealogy fun?

Doug

Hi

I may have found Emma's return - according to the passenger manifest for the Oroya a Mrs Dimmock arrived in the UK on 11/8/1891. Why do I think it's Emma, well the next name on the list is a Miss Tibbits.

And just tyo prove what a small world it is, in 1900 a Samson Dimmock was getting his mail delivered to him in Howard Queensland - looks like I'm not the first of my mob to live here!

I have found a few families over the years who have abandoned Queensland and returned to Britain.

I think it would have to be the biggest culture shock of all places in Australia.

Imagine going from the Black Country to the Queensland tropics, without creature comforts like air conditioning. Add the myriad tropical diseases and the not so friendly wildlife and I think home sickness would be guaranteed.

Life in News South Wales, Victoria or South Australia would have been far easier to adapt to.
