How can I find more about my late father, apart from sending for his army records.

Hi Jimmy,
Very interesting certificate and I've never seen one before.
Royal Navy research isn't my strong point but I'm afraid the only way I know to get particular information on Leonard is by ordering his service records from this link
http://www.veterans-uk.com/service_reco ... _navy.html or
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/army.html Check out these websites for general information on the maritime royal artillary and a Gunners personnel experience during the war.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stor ... 0126.shtmlOn this webpage you can scroll down and someone has the service history of a relative who served as a gunner on the merchant ships like your father and includes the process undertaken to obtain lots of information.
http://www.mercantilemarine.org/showthread.php?t=1400Hope this helps in your research Jimmy and maybe Mark or someone could advise because I'm not sure if his records would be held by the army or navy
Regards
Adrian

Hi Adrian,
Thanks for those links very interesting, my dad used to say after a few drinks that they used to watch the torpedo's heading towards the ships they were on.

Operationally they were under the Royal Navy although I suspect the original sign up documents would be with the army...
