Hi

I've just started to delve into my Irish roots and I'm having serious trouble locating a website where I can search all BMD records to find relatives.

There are lots of English ones and a good Scottish one where you can search to get the volume and page numbers of the certificates but I can't find the same for Irish certificates.

I know you can order them from the Irish Government Records Office but it asks for all information I don't have.

So far, with my English and Scottish ancestors, I have been able to find parents of grandparents by finding the entries of their birth or death registers so I can order the certificates but I can't find any details of parents of grandparents as I don't know their names.

Has anyone else searched Irish records and have any tips please?

Hi Kathryn,
I can understand your frustration I am from Northern Ireland and I too find it impossible to trace my family online.
May i suggest you could start with the 1901 census [all census before that were lost in a fire in Dublin] if you knew what county they were from the local library's have the 1901 census on microfilm .
You could then get a list of the surnames you are seeking and study them at home for your ancestors.
The census is where i started and it gives you ages so you can estimate year of birth etc.
Let me know what county they were from and if it is near me i will get back to you.Nora

You can access the 1911 and 1901 Census of Ireland online - as I'm new to the site I'm not sure about posting the link, if I'm requested to do so I will remove it.

No problem at all with the link. We're a non commerical site, so anything which helps another researcher is fine with me.

The Family Search site is operating a pilot project, providing index listings for BMD, and also gives the relevant information you would need to order certificates from the GRO-I, (more detailed information is given in the site at the bottom link for the "Ireland Collection") . Alternatively it also provides the film number which would allow the film to be ordered at your local LDS Family History Centre.

More recent records also provide the mother's maiden surname in the index.

I have also unsuccessfully been trying to find information about irish ancestors. I found the new familysearch only a few days ago and it looks really useful but I think their records are still quite limited so you have to have a bit of luck with what you need being on there. I searched the 1911 census but the family I am looking for had a daughter born in australia in 1884. I was hoping that I might find some of her brothers and sisters who were born in Cork, Ireland on this census as I dont know how many if any of them came to australia with their parents but no luck! Doesnt help that I dont know who any of them married to cross reference any results that came up. The only reason I was even able to find my great grandmothers siblings was because they were recorded on her australian birth certificate.

So, that is my long winded way of saying I totally understand your frustration with irish genealogy research and if i find anything useful I will let you know, but the familysearch is a great place to start.
