I have a marriage record from 1790 that says the groom was from the parish of Sherburn. Do I interpret this as where he was residing at the time or as the place where he was baptized as a baby?

I interpret this as the parish that would be responsible for him in the event that he needed poor relief.

This would be his parish of birth unless he had gained residency by means of various things that include apprenticeship for a number of years, workign for a number of years etc but I can't remember all the details.

That's a third possible interpretation I hadn't thought of! Thanks for your insight.

I look up a lot of marriages and find that they put of this parish but then find they are living in another parish
so maybe they preferred that church
especially with the Halesowen ones they married there and yet lived Rowley regis

I think it can mean anything or nothing!
Strictly speaking it would mean the parish where the person was residing prior to the marriage (and that might have implications for responsibility, depending on the social status of the peson). But as NK points out you can't rely on it 100%. If bride and groom were from different parishes then two sets of banns might be needed and so I think one person had a convenient address in the parish where the wedding would take place - saved money and hassle. They seem to have been particularly fluid in the Rowley Regis area and married in the nearest church often, even though it was not the parish church for either party.
In your case if the groom was from the Parish of Sherburn and the marriage took place elsewhere, I would take that to mean that he was living in Sherburn parish prior to his marriage. But it might even mean that the groom came from Sherburn originally. I would use it to guide your search but not trust it totally There is no way of telling what the person with the pen was thinking!

I have just the same situation, I have Moses Reading from Cradley, Marriage says he was from the Parish of West Bromwich. I know from other records that he was born in Cradley, so as Gardener says, I took it to mean that he had been living in West Bromwich, Moses was an Anchor Smith, so he could have been Apprenticed there.
