Could it be that the surnames were spelt incorrectly?
Free BMD have the following marriages on same page.

There is a death for an Emily Nicholls June quarter 1878 aged 32 in Birmingham 6d 118

Hi Cid......I suppose it is possible, but I have a copy of Birth Cert.dated 3rd.Oct.1874.
for my Grandmother stating....father William Nickless ...(Nicholls is crossed out !!)
Mother Emma Nickless..(formally Castle)
Although those dates certainly tie up. Does it state an occupation ?
Can a 2nd marriage be found for William between 1881 & 1884, as on 1891 Cens.
William & Mary Ann's eldest child is only 7 yrs .....Williams age and Occup. both tie up on this census.

Hi. Is it usual to have such a name 'varient' as late as the 1880s?
The dates certainly 'tie up' as the marriage in Sept. would have been
after the 1881 census...and William was living in Aston at the time.

Hi SS
Yes it is possible to have such variations. As most of the people couldn't read or write themselves they wouldn't know if the registrars were spelling their name correctly or not. I always use the soundex. And then there's still the possibitity that the person transcribing the data has read it wrong. I've found so many variations and errors in my own research, and I've not been doing it all that long........

Received Mar.certs for above..Williams age, occupation, father match....So name was probably
mis-transcribed.....Also his 2nd marriage to Mary Ann..matches age, occupation, father & fathers
occupation, although transcribed as Nickliss this time.......So thanks guys, will update BCC after
further check on Census.
