DUNNAKER, WILFRID GRIFFITHS.
GRO Reference: 1887 J Quarter in STOURBRIDGE Volume 06C Page 149.

Wilfrid Dunnaker attended Halesowen C of E school and was living at Blackheath when he volunteered for the Worcesters. Probably after returning to the front after recovery from wounds he was transferred to the Lincolns and posted to the 10th Battalion. They were on the Western Front for the battle of the Somme and in 1917 were in the front line for the first battle of Arras which started on the 9th April. Its relative success led to a second attack on the 23rd and a surprise attack on the 28th. The Lincolns took part in this last attack on the village of Roeux and its nearby chemical works. It was a difficult assignment against the well sited defences of the Hindenburg Line and was a complete failure. Private Wilfred Dunnaker was killed in action on this day and is buried in Roeux Cemetery (A 15). He is commemorated on the Blackheath, Halesowen and Halesowen C of E school Memorials.
