Can anyone help, or advise me on someone or an organisation who can? I am trying to trace a newly-found close relation (William Hunter) who worked as a Lift Attendant in the Glasgow Central Station Hotel (owned by the L.M.S London,Midland and Scottish railway group) around 1931 and 1932. I have absolutely no details on him, other than what ive just mentioned. An estimated guess would be that he was born between 1905 and 1915 and a resident of somewhere in Glasgow. I have contacted a sort of L.M.S appreciation society, but they could not help me nor point me in the direction of someone who could.
Is there such a thing as an organisation that holds personal details of employees of obsolete corporations, such as the L.M.S?
I have absolutely no idea of what to do next. I have been to Genealogy search centres in Glasgow, but William Hunter is/was quite a popular name and I also dont know his D.O.B or residence etc.

Hope someone can help!

1st January 1948 the LMS was nationalised and so became part of British Railways. I would imagine that the employee records would have passed into their hands when nationalisation happened.

The main problem is going to be that the railways were re-privatised in 1995, so I wouldn't like to guess what happened to the employee records.

british rail pension use to be ran from darlington but i doubt they would give you records even if they had them

Thinking about it, I don't think there is a requirement to keep employee records for more than 10 years, so they are probably long gone. Not the information you wanted, but unless a government department has them in the archives somewhere I think you are onto a major dead end.

Do you really have no more details? Describing him as a close relation suggests that you know how you are related ie you know who one of his parents was.
I'm not familiar with the Scottish birth cert system but it should be possible to limit your search to particular parents, and a ten year search could be done systematically.

Perhaps you could find him on the 1911 census? Or if he is not there then you could restrict a search to 1911-1915.

Or you could try http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/home/ where there are 20 entries for William Hunter b 1905-1915 in Glasgow (lots will be double or multiple entries of the same person). You might get lucky.

Thank you for the great response guys. Gardener; William Hunter is my grandfather. My father was born illigitimate and soon after adopted in 1932 and the only mention of his birth father is in a 77 year old lawyers letter. The only details given are his name and employer. These details only came to light a few months ago.

I have literally just read that there are lists of emplyees of railway companies up until 1949 at the National Archives - don't know how comprehensive they are but it would certainly be worth asking

Have you tried the National archives of Scotland? It looks as though they should have that sort of thing http://www.nas.gov.uk/doingREsearch/NASrecords.asp
or perhaps this lot: Scottish Archive Network http://www.scan.org.uk/ They seem to have staff records for the Caledonian company, bit difficult to see what they have.
Perhaps if you send an email asking if they have records pertaining to staff of the Glasgow Central Hotel 1931-32
