Birth Certificate/Statutory Declaration

Can anyone offer me any clues as to why Alice Pepper (Nee Cook) made this alteration (see certificate)? Her husbands death was registered in the first quarter of 1907, this action taken by Alice was obviously prompted by his death, why???

Any Ideas folks?

A copy of the certificate can be found at the following location;

Thanks,

Mark.

Have you tried to see whether the registers office have to keep a copy of the "Statuary Declaration"?

A registry office might be able to give you the legal situations in force at the time that allowed for a change of details.

Do you know who Sarah Staniland is?

Anything on the 1901/1891 census give any clues?

You might have already tried all these suggestions but ..

I will check with the registers office, thanks for that info. Sarah Staniland appeared on a census around the same area, maybe a friend witness I presumed or maybe you are thinking that there is a possible connection? A little bit more digging around to do I think??!! Thanks for your advice.

Yes I was wondering witness to what? Sisters/good friends would possibly be in on illicit affairs etc. Waiting until after the "father" died and then removing his name would suggest to me that he might not have been the father but she also changes her name which is intriguing.

Have you got any info on the original birth certificates/marriage details of Alice Pepper? Were there any other children of the marriage?

Sorry lots of questions and no answers but certainly a curious one.

Yes, I agree with that! I have visited Oxford Road and the address where he was a gardener on London Road is a short walk away.

Could be - I didn't go that far back because of the date of the eldest child - I was making the assumption that one followed the other closely in those days but of course there could have been others that died or ....

The date of this marriage means we should be able to find them on the 1881 census together.

This does raise the other question as to where the "Cook" reference comes from!

I think this marriage could be for Thomas and Mary Taylor, I can't see a Thomas with Alice in 1881.

I think Thomas and Alice married later, if they did marry.
