Hi all,

I am new to the forum - thanks for the warm welcome. Have been doing research on my own so far so hope my question is clear (somehow it all makes sense in your head, but looks confusing when you write it down!)

Does anyone have any idea how to find an actual burial location?
I am looking for the graves of Joseph and Maria (Pittman) CUTLER (address in 1891 census was Wood Gate, Northfield) who died in 1891 & 1898. Samuel (son of above) and Mary Jane (Lewis) CUTLER were buried in the churchyard of St Michael & All Angels but, of their 16 children (8 were dead by 1911) I have only located 3 graves.
I have some of the death certificates but they only show where the death was registered. The family lived in Bartley Green, Northfield (addresses were Bartley Green, Jiggins Lane, Adams Hill , Moor St, & Wood Gate).

Being a poor family of nail makers, would they have registered births & deaths? I have searched the church records from St Michaels (Bartley Green), Bishops's Transcripts from Harborne and various other records at the Family History Centre but find no record of the birth or death of 6 of Samuel & Mary Jane's children.

Thanks,
Serena

By the time you are talking about the births and deaths were a legal requirement although as now that was sometimes got round - however church records and bishop's transcripts etc do not record births and deaths but baptisms and burials. Baptisms were optional (were they religious or did the cost stop them doing it) and I presume that church burials were too.

Anyone confirm that last point.

if it was a paupers burial would there be a single grave as such with a record or a mass grave unmarked ?
