Buried: Citadel New MilitaryCemetery, Fricourt, Somme. IV C.2.

Notes: Citadel New Military Cemetery, 5km east of Albert in the Somme Department, was a field ambulance post in the months leading up to the Battle of the Somme.

Extract from the 'In Memoriam' column of the West Bromwich Weekly News" of April 6th 1917:- "WOORE. In ever loving memory of my dear husband, Company Sergeant Major Alfred Woore, 2nd Warwickshire Regiment, killed in action April 2nd 1916.
"Sleep on, dear one, in a far off land.
In a grave I may never see,
But as long as life and memory last,
I will remember thee.
Ever in the thoughts of his wife Gertrude Woore (nee Rollason), Whiteheath."

Extracts from the War Diary of the 2nd Battalion:

Fleurbaix, south west of Armentieres

“December 18th 1914 – The Battalion was ordered to advance in 3 lines at 4.30 p.m. to attack and take the German trenches which were in front of Le Malsnil. The attack was preceded by a heavy bombardment by our artillery to which the enemy made hardly any reply. Attack was started by B company on the right led by Capt. Haddon, advancing in 2 lines; A Coy advanced on the left in 2 lines with D Coy in the centre. C Coy formed the third line with entrenching tools. A Machine Gun was on each flank. Immediately the attack was opened, the enemy opened a very heavy rifle and machine gun fire. The Battalion advanced under this with steadiness, suffering very heavy casualties.

“The 2/Queens sent 1½ companies in support and although our dead were found only a few yards from the German trenches, the attack failed in its objective. What remained of the Battalion subsequently retired into our trenches.”

Casualties - Officers 6 killed, 3 wounded, 3 missing; Rank & File 57 killed, 87 wounded, 219 missing. The wounded included (then) Corporal Woore, whose wound was recorded by the “Birmingham Post” newspaper on 5th January 1915.

“2nd April 1916 – Shelling of Headquarters between 4 and 5 p.m. Casualties – Killed – Other Ranks 1.”

The one casualty was C.S.M. Woore.
