Can anyone help?

I've just looked again at some birth certificates from approx 1895 - 1930 and noticed that they all have either U.D or U.S.D in the column for where and when born. What does that shorthand mean please?

Is there a list anywhere of commonly used abbreviations/initials?

USD stands for Urban Sanitary District - part of the local government structure of the time responsible for sewers, drinking water and similar! Very generally speaking - USD for towns and RSD (Rural Sanitary District) for rural areas - both replaced by the Local Government Act of 1894.
