I posted in Introductions yesterday, so thanks to those who said hello!

Good to hear from Northern Lass, as my reason for turning to BCC and the Forum was an archived exchange in 2012 involving Northern Lass, Jimmy, nailer 2011 and Maths girl. I was searching for George JEPTHA as part of my research into my (Black Country) daughter in law's family tree.

I have some information to share, but I am not sure how much detail is usually put on the posts here.

My daughter in law’s great x3 grandparents are William SMITH (born 1830) and Leah BROOKES (born 1830), who were married at Dudley Parish Church on 16 September 1850; I have a copy of the marriage certificate. I was surprised when I looked at the transcript on BCC to find:

added by San 15/1/2014
(looked up by Rockyfowler)
Marriage 16 Sep 1851 St Thomas Dudley
William SMITH 20 B Nailer Netherton Father George Smith Nailer
Leah BROOKS 21 S Dudley Father William Brooks Labourer
After Banns/The X of Both
Wit: Elijah Danks X / Mirah Round X

First, the year has been incorrectly transcribed, but the other difference is that William’s father is given as George JEPTHA on the certificate.

This may affect the way that Jimmy looks at his great x3 grandfather.

I also have some thoughts on who might be the mother of William (born 1830) – do I set them out here?

I do appreciate that everything depends on George being Emma’s father. A linked question arose in the earlier exchanges regarding Anna SMITH who appeared on the 1851 Census as Ruth’s daughter. There was also a reference to the death of Hannah SMITH in 1851.

I did follow up those events and obtained the PDFs of the entries from GRO:

Births/1847/Q4/Dudley Union/18/317
Birth on 12th August 1847 at Garratt’s Lane in the Parish of Rowley Regis of Hannah, Girl; Father: not given; Mother: Ruth Smith; Informant: X the mark of Ruth Smith, Mother, Garratt’s Lane.

Deaths/1851/Q2/Dudley/18/240
Death on 14th April 1851 at Garratt’s Lane Rowley Regis of Hannah Smith, Female, age 3 Years and 8 Months; Cause: Small Pox Without Vaccination, No medical attendant; Informant: X the mark of Mary Stevens in attendance, Cherry Orchard Rowley Regis.

I note that Mary STEPHENS (SMITH born 1824) is shown on the 1851 Census as living at Cherry Orchard Street with husband Semion (presumably Solomon) STEPHENS.

Alas, there is no direct link to George.

Not sure where we go with this one

will move to brickwalls to chip away at.

It would be good to prove if George is father to all those kids.

Thank you, Jimmy, for bringing together the pieces of the jig-saw on the links between George and Emma.
One shows George on the 1841 Census with Aaron PARKES, wife Mary and son Walter. Another earlier post gave details of their marriage in 1840 – Mary was the daughter of James GREEN.
Interestingly, the next household (in the same house in Garratt’s Lane) is:
James GREEN 44 Publican Y
Sophia do. 44 Y
John do. 24 Nailer Y
Sophia do. 14 Y
Thomas do. 12 Y
Rebecka do. 10 Y

Hitchmough’s BC Pubs does list a James Green as the licensee in 1845 of the Duke William in Old Hill (Garratt’s Lane).

I am wondering if there is a connection between James Green and Joseph Green, father of Ruth. Let’s hope that it is not another brick wall!
