Place Names

Just after a bit of advice about recording places in the UK. Place names seem to be much more complicated over there than they are here in Oz and seemed to have changed a bit over time. I'm wondering if I should be recording e.g. place of birth as it was at the time, or as it is now. And how much detail on the place name. I am coming across things like, Blackheath, Staffs; Blackheath, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire; Blackheath, West Midlands. Any advice?

Hi Amy
I like to record them as they were on the census or certificates I find
So Old HIll Staffordshire
rather than
Old Hill Sandwell
I personally think that is the right way to do it and certainly on the Black Country Connections tree that
is the way I like it done.
That way we see where the old boundaries were.
