According to the 1851 census James was born in Atherstone, Warwickshire, I had a quick look but found nothing.

wits at his wedding don't help
I don't think we can go further back on James Smart so unless we can find a baptism will move this thread to Brickwalls.

many thanks to everyone for your help as WILLIAM SMART was my gt gt grandfather and he married EMMA CALLAWAY . EMMAS parents are NANCY ANN PAGE and JOB CALLAWAY any info on JOBS parents and grandparents would be much appreciated ,im loving tracing the family tree .gemcat.
