If Richard did die in 1880, I was wondering if this could be him in the earlier census...

Definately says Richard J Cooper but what does his occupation say?

1871: Perrott Street, Oldbury
Richard Hooper 28 Head ??? Oldbury
Mary Hooper 28 Wife Dudley
Eliza H Hooper 5 Dau Oldbury
Thomas R Hooper 4 Dau Oldbury
Rebecca Wood 13 Serv Spon Lane

I did see that one Mally, his occupation is Auctioneer. I dismissed that at first because of him being an Articled Clerk, but wondering now if this could fit as he may have progressed from a clerk to an Auctioneer.
