Can anyone decipher the added text on this 1851 census entry?


It reads: Edmund Williams, Bastard Boy (crossed out with some text above it), 7, a base child

I am trying to read the text above Bastard Boy as it may give some clue as how Edmund ended up in this household.

There's no proof obviously but if his father Thomas was of the opinion that the child wasn't his he might have used the original form to voice his suspicions. The Registrar dutifully filled in the main register from the form but the Superintendent Registrar may then have struck through the entry and added his own comment after reviewing it.

You could definitely be on the right lines here. The full record shows that Edmund was born with a different surname (his mother's presumably) and location to the rest of the household. It's unclear to me whether the head, the unimaginatively named Thomas Thomas is indicated as his father. The text probably clarifies or corrects the "Bastard Boy" description in some way.
