You picked an odd one there Peterd!
I can only find Amelia Portman on the 1871/61 census.
Ancestry trees have her as the daughter of Thomas Portman and Sarah (Siveter), and Thomas as the son of John Portman and Mary Ann (Bayliss)
In 1841 Thomas is home with his parents but in 1851 he is with his grandparents Thomas and Phoebe Bayliss. Perhaps that caused some confusion?
The Ancestry tree is here
http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/pt/person.a ... 1677282134Don't know if it is significant that John Portman is down as a bachelor when he married Sarah Hackett? Did he actually marry Mary Ann Bayliss?

There is this family in 1871
Halesowen, islington
Thomas Portman, 38, horse nail maker
Sarah ditto,32
Amelia ditto,13
Alice ditto,12
William ditto,10
Joseph ditto,6
Arthur ditto,4
Benjamin ditto,1
I think that is Amelia who married Joseph Guest and her brother William who is living near them in 1881 (Peterd's first post). Can't prove it though

I dont think that John Portman and mary Ann Bayliss ever married
Gardener think you are right the fact in 1862 he is a bachelor our John Portman is very significant
so although the son of John Portman and Mary Ann Bayliss is bapt as a Thomas Portman here....
THOMAS PORTMAN
Christening: 08 JUN 1835 Halesowen, Worcester,
Parents:
Father: JOHN PORTMAN
Mother: MARY ANN
Extracted
I bet he was really a Bayliss
so his dau maybe used Portman and Bayliss
and when she married had to use the correct surname
or was she married before Mary Ann Bayliss?
is John his father?

I bet this is her death
1842
BAYLISS Mary A Halesowen Dudley Register Office HAL/002/436
So John never married Mary Ann
Thomas is bapt as a Portman
marries as Portman to Sarah Siviter
Dau is regis as Amelia Portman in 1857 halesowen
she maybe has a kids and calls them
Eliza PORTMAN Step Daur 6 Halesowen,
Albert E. PORTMAN Step Son M 3 Halesowen,
but for some reason has to get married using true surname which is Bayliss
21 Mar 1880, St Lukes
Joseph Guest, 20, B, Nailer, Halesowen, Thomas Guest, Nailer.
Amelia Baylis, 23, S, Halesowen, Thomas Baylis, Horse Nailer.
Witnesses. Edward Hawkeswood, and Mary Price.
