Hi,

I'm back again doing a little bit more of this work, although it does seem like I am going to struggle, but I feel there may well be answers out there for me.

William Toy married Betty Westwood in 1786, Halesowen although this hasn't been 100% confirmed as my ancestor, I do feel it's a strong link.

Anyway, I don't have a birth year for this William just yet, but I did some research on Family Search and a William Toy was christened in 1768 in Halesowen. How would I be able to check a link to this? What documents would support it? Could I try and trace this particular William Toy against Ancestry or other sources for William Toy's born in the same time, maybe check death records to see if the life span is consistent with this? What can I do?

Yes, but I can't be certain if that is the my ancestor.

He had a son also called William, b 1788 - 1871.

But how can I verify it's the same one?

if any of the witnesses on the marriage of william is a toy we might able to link them into the christening ie sibling ?

So I need to purchase the wedding certificate.

You can't buy certificates as such for these older records. There are just the church records at the archives.
I have a transcription and it says

10 apr 1786
William Toy otp bach and Betty Westwood otp spin
William and Betty both made their mark.
Witnesses were John Clark and Joseph Chandler

I think Joseph Chandler was a church warden or something, witnesses a few marriages. John Clark made his mark.

Ok, couldn't John Clark have been someone who just worked at the church, or happened to be strolling past going about his day when he was asked to witness a marriage?

By the way, where is this record held? Can I see it online?

To see the entry itself you would have to go to the archives in Worcester (? not too sure where) and look at microfilm.

John Clark could have been anyone I suppose.

Who exactly are you going backwards from? And what do you know about him?

St John Halesowen will be at Dudley archives too.

What is the furthest-back ancestor that you are sure of? When and where was he born?

I was just wondering what options there might be for checking things. It gets hard once you are beyond the census and proper BMD certificates.

I've started to compile a bunch of William Toy's I can find from LDS site, and see if I can link any of them.

The area that I am concentrating on is obviously Halesowen, rather than Quinton because it was under the Halesowen parish up until 1840s.

Now I don't really know the area as well as some so some of these I may be able to discount.

William Toy b 1772 d 1819 - Worcester
William Toy b 1733 d 1817 - Birmingham

William Toy b 1811 d 1857 - Kingswinsford
William Toy b 1801 d 1825 - Birmingham

Now I know many of these may not be William Toy b 1768, but they may be linked somehow.

It also seems that William Toy was a family name through 3 generations.
