ARC......John Stafford marriage ?

Hi everyone,

I've been attempting to find out more on my Stafford family for a long time but was stuck on John Stafford who'd married an Elizabeth around the early 1790's however I was unable to find any suitable marriage entry. I found this entry on the freereg site (I think recently added) but I'm a little unsure because I can not find it listed on anyother site.

freereg
County Staffordshire

Place Sedgley Staffs

Church All Saints

Register Number 1246

Marriage Date 30 Dec 1793

Groom John STAFFORD

Groom Parish Sedgley

Groom Condition Bachelor

Bride Elizabeth HIGGS

Bride Parish Sedgley

Bride Condition Spinster

Witness One Ann ?

Witness Two William WOOLLEY
Notes Groom signs X. Witness 1's surname is illegible - might read Hardral - Hardnal? Groom's surname written as Statford & Stafford.
FileNumber 36010

The above fits perfectly but I'm wondering does anyone else have any information that confirms the above before I spend time researching.

Many thanks
Adrian

Hello Adrian,

FreeREG for Staffordshire, which covers parish registers in the Black Country, are putting a lot of baptisms, marriages and burials on their web site which can't been found on any other web sites.

The one you have found on FreeREG is transcribed from the parish register.

Hi,

Many thanks for your reply which is very positive.

Any idea why the IGI didn't pick the marriage entry up given that it covers the years required. I assumed that they all used the same parish records informaton.

Regards
Adrian

I can only think that when The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) who photocopied the parish registers to produce them on microfilm known as the International Genealogical Index (IGI), which were then entered on their web site, that they missed some of the pages in the registers.

Not all churches agreed with the Mormon beliefs so would not give them permission to photocopy their registers.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

That makes perfect sense and looking at the freereg entry it seems that the original entry was difficult to read. One of the names was illegible to read and the surname of Stafford could be read as stratford.

I'm going with it

This post is sorted.

Thanks for helping.
Adrian
