Hmmm, I'm not holding my breath, it says a complete change in the IT system will be needed and I bet they flog off the job of actually providing the info, once it's on the new system, to a commercial enterprise. Anyway the majority of the current cost is probably counted as labour costs, so I don't suppose any reduction will be that great.

Very likely to be bought by one of the genealogy company's like Ancestry ,so either way we will still end up paying . Only good thing is that we will be able to have instant certificates instead of waiting for them to be delivered .

Not to worry - for the no changers - it probably won`t happen and the next government will put up the LOSS making system- at the moment they lose money on each certificate (Tax payers money)

I'm not sure how they work out that supposed loss. The paper, though expensive, can't cost more than £1, packing & postage £2, VAT less than £2 that means more than £5 to fill in the form and cover 'general expenses'. It must be possible to fill in a form in 10 minutes so that's £30 an hour income. I know that some Civil Servants live in gilded cages but the majority work out of crummy office blocks on less than average wages so where does that £30 go?
