Jane Rickards born c 1847 Worcester - this is based on census information from 1871 onwards; I have been unable to find any information re birth, but have confirmation of her name from 3 of her childrens' birth certificates.
Jane shows as 'wife' of Joseph Beard on censuses, although on the original of the 1881 census she shows as 'wife' and 'unm'!!!!
1871 census - 'visitor' at 2 Stourbridge Road, Dudley, with husband Joseph Beard; my maternal grandfather Herbert Thomas Beard was their first son and born 16th April 1872 in Dudley (I have his original birth certificate)
1881 census Jane and Joseph living High Street, Court2, Worcester, with 4 children - Herbert Thomas age 8; William Henry age 6; Clarinda Charlotte age 5; Joseph age 3.
1891 census Jane shows as widow age 44, living 7 Summer Street, Worcester; youngest child is 5, so ( Possible death for Joseph 1888 age 42 Q1 Vol 6c p.194 Worcester (not as yet confirmed))
1901 census - nothing found
1911 census living Summer Street Worcester, age 64
Possible death Jane - 1913 age 66, Q3 Vol6c p133 Worcester (as yet not confirmed)
Questions
Were Jane and Joseph actually married?
Where and when was Jane born? There has been a suggestion that maybe the surname was incorrect on birth registration as few were able to read or write so the names were recorded by the 'Registrar' based on their personal verbal interpretation, so it could have been recorded as ?Ricketts? There is a possibility here in relation to a Herbert and Martha Ricketts who did have a daughter Jane around the right time in Worcester.
Is there anyone who could check this out locally? (I live in Suffolk now) (? dudley taylor or corner shop?)
I hope this makes sense
