Jane Elliott born, (? somewhere, could have been England or Madras area India ?) in 1844. Father's name was George Elliott. She married a Mr ? Thompson and became Jane Thompson while still in her teens. However by 1864 she was a widow aged 20 and married again to William Godden (also usually spelt Goddin) in Madras India, at St Mary's. Believed to have died in India and possibly buried at Palaverham Madras. William Godden / Goddin was my Gt grandfather. He was a musician in the Hampshire Regiment stationed at Fort St George Madras and a member of the Governor's band. Their son Walter Elliott Goddin, b 10th January 1879 was my grandfather. He had several brothers and sisters in India. Walter and his brother Daniel also joined the Hampshires. Walter became a bandmaster Sergeant (Colour Sergeant) and retired from the Army in May 1912 and became a music teacher in Bath and Waterford Ireland for a while later joining an orchestra in Worthing where he died in 1938 before I was born. Two of his sons, my uncles Norman and Douglas Goddin were also in the Hampshires during WW2. Would anyone have any knowledge of where the Elliott family started out from in England before going to India? If the Mr Thompson that Jane married was an Army man as was our family, they could have come from anywhere in England. I also don't know if Jane Thompson had any children before being widowed. There are a number of Jane Elliotts in BMDs too many to trace individually and two marriages to Thompsons but neither seem to fit unless someone else has researched this family. I believe William Godden / Goddin originated from Wiltshire area Hampshire border, possibly around Pewsey? Any help appreciated.

Peter; I got a lot of info from FIBIS but haven't tried the other site. Will do so tomorrow, Thanks.
I did get a London researcher to go to the India Office about ten years ago to get some info for me.
Mallosa; I hadn't looked up that one but found another two from 'up north' but couldn't find any
connection with the military or the Hampshire Regiment. I'll do a check. Thanks. Tim.

Hallo again Mallosa, I checked the Andrew & Jane Elliot you mentioned; Her Elliot spelt with only one T. I tried to keep to the spelling as given. No connection with that part of the country, ... as far as I know!
Peter, I have most of the info you came up with except a few of the details and had also thought that the birth of Lydia could have been the cause of Jane's death, Lydia dying only about a week later. Tragic.
But India was well-known for the number of people who died from the many diseases about there in those days. I had also got the death of that William as well. If he is the correct person he must have stayed
in India when the regiment returned to England. I have Walter Elliott Goddin's wedding photo, (Victoria Barracks, Portsmouth 1906) and assumed the elderly man in uniform, front row near groom, was William.
However the info for Jane Amelia's marriage I didn't have. There was another sister who married someone with an 'Indian' name. (Can't remember now, it's in my file somewhere.) I will do a check on the Rosier
family. The name sounds French or possibly from Jersey? But a Welsh Regiment. Thanks again to both of you. Unfortunately although I have been to the Hampshire Regiment's archive in Winchester a couple
of times and emailed them there has not been anything forthcoming from there except a request for money! The first time I went there I saw a shield with Daniel Goddin's name on it but on my next visit they
denied ever having such a shield. (Daniel was Walter's brother) Regards,Tim.

PS: I don't know what George Elliott's occupation was I'm afraid. Presumably something to do with the Army, unless Jane had gone to India with first husband Mr ? Thompson who may also have been an Army man?

Yes that's the one Peter; Should have looked at the file before writing it was another brother NOT sister! Abernathee sounded like an Indian name to me. None at all in UK Censuses.
The Rosiers came back to England and lived in Aston Birmingham where William Samuel Rosier was born. (1911 Census) My mother never mentioned having any relatives up that way.
Unfortunately we haven't got any closer to finding Jane Elliott / Thompson / Goddin. Regards, Tim.
