I'm looking for the birth certificate of my great grandfather John WHILE. There are two identical entries in 1847 for John WHILE Rowley Regis Sandwell Register office with different reference numbers ie RR/11145 and RR/11/70. How do I determine which is the right one please? Or should I have put this in the Look-up section? Please bear with me - this is my first attempt on the forum.

The father's name was John too. I will do as you suggest and hope that one of them has a different named father.
Thank you for the suggestion.

Yes, this is definitely the right WHILE family. I have them on all the censuses except 1871. I've tried all variations of spelling that I can think of. The difficulty I have with the suggestion of sending for both birth certificates but asking them only to send the one with father John is that it's not available on line, therefore I would have to send a cheque, so would I have to send a cheque for £7 or £14 do you think? Sorry to ask silly questions, but I'm used to dealing with GRO on line.
Thank you all for you help, this site is amazing!

Poppygirl all you need to do is contact Sandwell registry office and say that you want them to check out the 2 Johns born Rowley Regis in 1847 and only want the one with father John
send em an email
they will tell you then if they have it
and then will probably say send a cheque for £7
now Dudley regis office you can apply online

Thank you very much for your help.
Incidentally, I believe Eliza who was married to old John WHILE subsequently married someone called TOLLEY after John died in 1864. On 1891 census she is widowed again and living with son John WHILE at 6 Yew Tree Lane, Rowley Regis which is where my grandmother was born.
