I am posting this in this section as I think it is really important and myself and Wolvie are quite upset by what we saw yesterday.

I was looking on behalf of someone for their Grandmothers resting place.
Thanks to RF I discovered this was at ChristChurch Quarry Bank New Cemetary Victoria Road.
So Yesterday I visited it to see if I could see the gravestone.
Previously I had contacted the Vicar of Christchurch Quarry Bank and he said he did not know of a Graveyard Plan, nor did the Archives,
nor was there any monumental inscriptions.

The Graveyard was in a dreadful state.
One section at the top is overgrown by Brambles so that any graves under there...and there were many are inaccessible.
There were graves from those that had been War Heroes covered in undergrowth!!
It was a disgrace.
In another section there was it looked like a foxhole with...and it looked to me like bones near it...quite large ones...I do hope not human ones.
But the fox hole ...if it was a fox hole seemed to bury right near to one of the graves.

I have contacted Dudley Council and await their response.
And have recontacted the Vicar just to double check that no plan exists and to ask if there are any plans to tidy up the graveyard.

I was pleased to find the burial info and give it to the relative of the Lady we were looking for, but horrified to see the condition of the
graveyard she resides in.

Does anyone know anything about any Graveplan for that cemetary.

When you spoke to the Vicar, NL, did he say that the responsibility of the churchyard had been transferred over to the Council? Because if not, the incumbent and/or the Parochial Church Council (PCC) are responsible for the upkeep.

I know that some Churches kept a Grave Register (or something with a similar name) but it sounds as though the Vicar of Quarry Bank doesn't have that either.

Still looking for some of my rels in there its worse in the summer!! extra beer cans and more overgrowth !! I think if the council took it over it would just level it

I know just how you feel N L about that graveyard, I last visited about 5 years ago ,looking for my husbands grandparents grave .It had a large headstone and it was a brick grave , but I coudn"t find it due to the overgrowth.
2 years ago I too asked the Vicar if there was a grave plan,he said no.But how did they know when the cemetery was full.

Hi Vicar has said that it is under the control of Dudley Council now.
So the church is not responsible.

He doesn't think there is a graveyard plan but will have a recheck.


If there is no plan as Pat says how on earth do they know where to bury them.

Seemed to me when I visited that the upper right bit is the old graves area.
I think they closed it off in 2004?...2008?...read it somewhere can't remember date closed off now.

will see what Dudley Council reply to my email.

Surely if those bones were human they have to sort something out

do you have the name if so did you find it in the burial book at dudley...it would have a grave number.

I was thinking if there is a grave up that end that is still visible and we know the number from the burial book say it is 1020 ...and say I am after
1023...which I am.....then we know it is near there...would that be a way of finding them.

I wonder if going thru the entire burial book for that cemetary and putting the "rows" in in number order and names on a spreadsheet
would help......the existing ones would direct us to area ie upper right /centre/ upper left etc....any ideas anyone of a plan ?

Hello NL ,The names of my husbands grandparents were
Issachar Willetts died July 1920 age 45 years
His Wife
Frances Lily Willetts died November1940 age 63years.
I first visited the grave in the late 1950"s, and from my recollection it was on the left hand side of the cemetery at the back ,as you looked from the road.
At one time there used to be a small chapel in the middle.
I have seen their names in the burial book at the archives but cannot remember the number.I will look again next time I go.
I wouldbe willing to help in any way I can re mapping of the cemetery.

Where it’s written “photo” these are from the burials which peterd took on his travels and are in the photo gallery on this forum.

Now, I’ve got Plot numbers which I’ve no idea whereabouts in the churchyard they lie and in my “source” info on Family Tree software I’ve got Monumental Inscriptions. These Plot numbers are not written in the burial registers and apparently the Archives don’t have any MI’s for the church, so, where did I get them from?

I can only think that someone gave them to me, but if they did, where did they get the Plot numbers from? Could be that they have the papers for the burials!

Bit of an update....I am now in contact with the Bereavement manager at Dudley Council who is sending someone out
to look at the brambles ....those that maintain the facility.
The Bones he only found small ones...but Wolvie and I deffo found large ones...so maybe seen in different areas dem bones!
He seems to be moving things forward so watch this space!!

Peterd you up to some photos if all brambles get cleared my camera aint a patch on yours!!

Not heard back from Vicar re a dble check......but will chase him.

Did get an idea from bereavement to check with worcs. diocese so will do that.

Barb there are 2 graveyards...1 is around church the other is the Victoria Road one I am interested in....bit further from church

Apparently on the burial Records not all have a grave entry no....so any idea of mapping may not work.

Yes, I do know that there is a churchyard (around the church) and a graveyard (Victoria Road.) I should have said in my post that my burials were in the church grounds. Anyway, that could mean that there are MI's for the churchyard and not the graveyard in Victoria Road

You're definitely right, not every entry in the burial register has a grave number.

Hi DT could you if you a min just pop in to the Hive and see if they have any
Monumental Inscriptions for Christ Church Quarry Bank both the church yard and the new cemetary at Victoria Road
and also
if they have a Graveyard Plan of both Graveyards....especially the Victoria Road one.

Or phone them and ask?
I don't know if Worcs. have the Quarry bank info.
