Chavasse....I've found this interesting Surname amongst my Family tree and I wondered if it was French. Is there anybody that could enlighten me as to whether or not this is the case? Also I don't know whether it is pronounced cha-vas, sha-vas, cha-vays or sha-vays. I would be most gratefull if anyone could let me know by emailing me dan@deluka.co.uk
Thanks.

I'm not sure whether you've got any further with this. Chavasse is obviously a French surname, pronounced sha-vass, there is one very famous military Chavasse:

whose brother was Bishop of Rochester and an Olympic athlete. They were the sons of a Bishop of Liverpool, I believe. I'm not sure whether the family were Huguenot (Protestant) refugees. There is a Father Paul Chavasse at the Birmingham Oratory. I know that he had an ancestor around 1600 who was clergyman - I'm not sure whether Catholic or Protestant - in the Savoy area, that is the area around Geneva. I hope this helps!
