Just messing about on the net and found this post by Nigel Brown (Cradley links) posted in 2003.

"I have in front of me the 1910 census for West Town, Chicago, and I see Benjamin Woodhouse (blacksmith), wife Matilda, sons James, Benjamin, Samuel and David and daughters Maria and possibly Matilda. Could they be yours? Nearby I have found Caleb Woodhouse, widow (late wife Ellen nee Raybould), with daughter Maria married to Albert Fradgley, and family. I have in my possession a postcard from this Maria in Chicago, dated May 21 1909, to her cousin, my great grandfather John Raybould in Cradley. She refers to her uncles Ben, Will and James. I know that Caleb was born in about 1854 and his father was William. I believe Caleb also has a sister Mary. In the UK census 1881 Caleb has already emigrated and Ellen is in Graingers Lane, Cradley Heath with son William and daughter Maria. They left for Chicago the next year".

Just noticed this on BCC
1901: Station Road, Hagley, Worc
Caleb Woodhouse 39 Head Chain Manufacturer Employer b.Cradley Heath, Staffs
Lousa M Woodhouse 33 Wife b.Dudley
Ewart N Woodhouse 12 Son b.Cradley, Staffs
Lizzie Edge 18 Servant (Gen Dom) b.Old Hill

Can't be the aforementioned Caleb can it? The one on BCC may be him as his father is down as William.

My Foley family also moved there in 1904 from Tibbetts Garden. Must be where the nouveau riche went.

So as not to confuse the issue I don't think the Caleb in the 1901 census fits in anywhere yet. The point I am pursuing is that the Caleb c1854 in America may be the one on BCC with father William. If it is then we have a few more details to add, ie wife, children etc.

1881 census at 68 Graingers Lane:
Ellen WOODHOUSE (nee Raybould) Wife (Head) M Female 28 Cradley, Worcester, England Chainmaker
William J. WOODHOUSE Son Male 8 Cradley, Worcester, England Scholar
Maria WOODHOUSE Daur Female 5 Rowley, Stafford, England Scholar

So who is the one in England 1901 born c1862 with wife Louisa and who is the Benjamin with wife Matilda and 6 children?
If anyone has the time perhaps they could be tracked down prior to emigrating.

This one fits the bill for Caleb in 1881 at 18 Graingers Lane Cokeland Place. Did he then marry Louisa in 1900?

WOODHOUSE Caleb BIRCH Louisa M Dudley, Central Methodist Church, Wolverhampton Street Dudley Register Office 002/001/7

Emmanuel WOODHOUSE Head M Male 60 Rowley, Stafford, England Chainmaker Employs 4 Men & 2 Boys
Ann WOODHOUSE Wife M Female 59 Rowley, Stafford, England
Caleb WOODHOUSE Son U Male 19 Rowley, Stafford, England Chainmaker
Albert WOODHOUSE Son Male 16 Rowley, Stafford, England Chainmaker
Emmanuel WOODHOUSE Son Male 14 Rowley, Stafford, England Scholar

It looks like there was a marriage between Caleb Woodhouse and Louisa Birch in 1900 at Dudley. It looks as though this could be Calebs second marriage.
1891 census finds him with his son and Annie.
New Town Lane, Rowley Regis,
Caleb Woodhouse, head, 28, Chain Manufacturer, Rowley
Annie, wife, 28, Kingswinfroed
Ewart N, son, 2, Rowley

Well done both of you. That 1920 census seems to confirm the Caleb and Fradgley connection and that he emigrated before 1881 and that he could be the son of William and Sophia.
