John Higgins was my mother's Great Grandfather on her mother's side. As a child I was always told that John was Irish who came to England during the Potato Famine and that there were some relatives in Liverpool.

He married Frances Phoebe Timmins 5 March 1882 at St Thomas in Dudley, Worcestershire. They had nine children John William (7th May 1882), William John (2 Jun 1883), Frances Mary Elizabeth (4 May 1884), John Thomas (28 March 1886), Lilian (12 March 1888), Ernest (1891), William Henry (21 December 1892), Joseph Edward (1894) and James Arthur (1897). Frances Phoebe died in 1898 in Oldbury, Worcestershire. On 20 May 1899 John Higgins married Hannah Thompson at Holy Trinity Church at West Bromwich, Staffordshire. They had one son William Paul (1901). On both his marriage certificates he states his his father as Richard Higgins deceased.

I can not find him in the census before 1901. In the 1901 Census he is stated as a labourer at a chemical works living at 53 Rood End Road, Rood End, Warley. He says he was born in Dudley, Worcestershire. In 1911 he is living at 20 Cyprus Street in Oldbury. In this census he says he was born in West Bromwich.

The problem is none of the John Higgins born in 1850s in Dudley or West Bromwich had a father called Richard. I know this as the registrars at both locations have checked the certificates.
