James Brayfield Poole is my Great-Great-Grandfather on my Dad's Maternal line. Not a lot is known about this line as my Nan's Father (James' son) William John Poole was a alcoholic and left her mother, Alice Lilian Braithwaite, and my Nan, Doris, when she was a young child. I do know that both James and William John were Pork Butchers. The problem lies with the fact that James changes his date of birth and place of birth at every census. I have been able to find the family through his wife Mary Ann as her date of birth and place of birth never changes.
James can be first found in 1871 census living at 86 John Street in the village Ettingshall near Bilston, Staffordshire aged 23. He is stated as a Butcher Master. He is living with his wife Mary (Ann), daughter Eliza, son William (not William John) and his father William. He gives his date of birth as abt 1848 in Southampton.
Next, we find him living at 17 Green Croft in Bilston, Staffordshire in 1881. He says he was born abt 1849 in Walford, Leicestershire. James is now living with wife Mary Ann, daughters Eliza (12), Sarah (10) and Clara (6), as well as sons James (8) and William John (2). At this time he is working as a Pork Butcher.
In the 1891 census he is living at 34 Church Street in Bilston, Staffordshire with wife Mary Ann, daughters Sarah (19), Clara (6), Annie (10), Pollie (6) and son William John (14) working as a Pork Butcher. He gives the year as abt 1851and his place of birth as Bilston, Staffordshire.
At the turn of last century in the 1901 census, James gives his date of birth as abt 1851 in Watford, Northamptonshire. He is living at 344 Willenhall Road in Wolverhampton working as a Pork Butcher with William now also working as a Pork Butcher. At this point he is living with his wife Mary Ann, his children William (23), Annie (19) and Polly (14).
I have sent hours at the Staffordshire County Archive looking through parish registers for record of James prior to 1871in addition to his marriage to Mary Ann but have come up blank.
Recently, I have found James in the 1911 census. I was most interested in this census as it was the first to be filled out by the people themselves and contained information about any marriages. In this census James says he was born in 1844 in Crick, Northamptonshire. It also states that he has been married to Mary Ann for 44 years with 9 children being born to the marriage but with only 7 living.
