Please can anyone tell me how I can find out if a relative went to prison in around 1931-1933.

Back then there was much more coverage of court business in local papers so if you know whereabouts the case was held you might try the local papers.
The National Archive holds records or can give advice on further searching.
Find My Past has some records for that era.
