On page 462 of the Rowley Regis PR's there's an entry that reads:

10 June 1742 Jere Michae. A black of Mr Russell's of Birmingham. P. Buried.

So was he a slave? Was Mr Russell in the slave trade?

Nothing to do with Jere Michae, but there is a record in the Himley parish registers in the 1700s of a burial of 'a Negro from Antigo' - so possibly the Earl of Dudley had a slave? - cant remember name or date.

Ooh many thanks for that Steve, yes that's right, I remember now, he was the Cradley Heath Baptist Jamaican Minister, George must have been so dedicated. Sorry Jan do not know about Netherton, I suppose George Cousins could have preached there too, was that Messiah Baptist Chapel?

Found this text on Dudley Archives - George Cousins / Cosins, who was a Black Baptist Minister. George was born in Jamaica, but worked in many Baptist Churches in the Black Country (Brierley Hill, Cradley Heath etc). George was born c1805, and died in 1881.

Says that George worked in many BC Baptist Chapels, so yes he could have well preached at Netherton.

Cheers from Lin.

Did they in those days have slaves? might not have necessarily been in the slave trade. :?

Yes they did - slavery wasn't abolished in this country until very early 1800s.

'Blacks' were fashionable accessories in the George 2nd period, but it also raises the question of which Mr Russell?
