Dear Sirs,
I expect there is a logical explanation as to why, in a UK website, essentially about UK people, that there is an American Spellchecker, but it escapes me!

Ancestry use American spellings on their co.uk site

I am referring to this site of course. When I write a private message I am prompted by the American Spellchecker. I can understand the Ancestry site in UK having the American as it has a sister site with the dot com version, though I think the UK version should be corrected to having the British English Spellchecker.

Mine comes up in Danish, but then I do have a Danish computer. It's easily changed to UK English, when a word is underlined right click and change the language - on my pc it remembers this, so it's only a one time thing! From what I can see it's down to my pc and not down to this forum.

I think it depends what browser you're using or how it's set up - mine never used to mark dodgy spelling, but it could be an upgrade that's responsible . I can only change the language when a spelling mistake has been picked up on. Not that I usually do, as I'd be swapping between English and Danish all the time! If I've changed it from one language to another my pc remembers this for the next time I'm on - it's not site dependent. It can be annoying at times though, as it tends to change the first letter of a noun to a capital, and some words it changes completely, like "who" becomes "WHO", or "next" becomes "NeXT" if I'm on the Danish - weird!!!

Thank you all for your replies. It's not my computer, it's defaulted to UK English. Apart from our Danish friend, it would appear it doesn't pose too much of an irritation. In any event I posted my question more from curiosity than anything else. For the most part I like a spellchecker to notice my typing mistakes. I am not like Harry Potter but I am a good speller (especially in UK English)

It's not just on this forum, that my pc "tries" to help with the spelling! I get it on my web based e-mail and when I'm entering stuff on tribal pages - so it has to be to do with my web browser, rather than this site. It always comes up in the same way, and when I right click I can change the language in the same way - I suspect my husband has activated the system as he's dyslexic and is hopeless at spelling (it must be bad when he asks me - a non native Danish speaker - how to spell something in Danish. What with silent d's and g's that sound like sh and funny vowels like æ, ø and å that sound like you're clearing your throat!).
