As we approach 2014 it will be 100 years since World War One.

So many lost their lives.

So many lost sons, husbands, and brothers ....

If your Ancestor is from the Black Country Area please put a post on this thread.

Please just post a few lines with their details and hopefully the list will grow.
Just one post please per ancestor, we will not run with researching the ancestor on this thread.

I would like to try and add these names to a Roll of honour for our BCC get together next year in JULY.

I will start off with My Great Grandfather

who died age 44
on 03 April 1919
Son of William and Jane Rose, of Cradley Heath; husband of Emily Rose, of 33, Clifton St., Old Hill. .
Remembered with honour
CRADLEY HEATH (ST. LUKE) CHURCHYARD Memorial and he is also buried at St Lukes.

He was in the Boar war and received some medals. He was also in the first world war.
As well as being on the Cradley Heath memorial, he is mentioned in a roll of honour booklet published by the local council just after the Great War, under the Old Hill council ward. A copy of this was placed inside the war memorial at Powke Lane Crematorium in Blackheath, although no names are listed on the memorial itself.

I'd like to remember my great grandfather:

John Jeavons 1877-1928
He was born and brought up in West Bromwich, and apart from serving in the Royal Engineers during WW1 he always lived in the Trinity Road area. John worked as an iron moulder, and doesn't seem to have joined the army until 1916. During his service in Mesopotamia he contracted malaria, which would plague him the rest of his life, so much so that when he died, the Family thourght he was having a bout of malaria, but he died of pneumonia after putting in a full days work. We haven't been able to find out any definate information of John's service in Mesopotamia, but the country has been described as "Hell with flies"!
John's service must have affected him in some way, his relationship with his youngest daughter was never good - she was born in 1914, and when John came home after the war not only was she turfed out of her mothers bed, but she didn't recognise her father.

Also his brother John WESTON b.1893,husband of Florence(nee Rowberry).
survived the war but due to his traumatic experiences eventually died
in a mental hospital.

"Pte Wilcox had served in the South African Campaign. He was the husband of Eliza Wilcox of 2/7 Eel Street, Oldbury, and son of the late Benjamin and Sarah Wilcox of Canal Side, Whimsey Bridge, Oldbury. In early June 3rd Worceters in rTenches between the Menin Road and Sanctuary Wood in the Ypres salient. Four men were killed, including Pte Wilcox."

William Henry Allchurch, born circa 1885. Seventh of 9 children born to Elijah Allchurch and Mary Ann nee Litchfield. Baptised at St. Mark's Church, Stambermill in 1898. Living at Stourbridge Road, Lye in 1891 and Ambelcote Bank in 1901. Served in the 1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. Awarded the Military Medal (date of gazette 12th May 1917). Died 10th October 1917 and buried at Godewaersvaelde British Cemetery.

Dies of Wounds

Mr. and Mrs. E. Allchurch, 60, Stamford Road, Ambelcote, have received information of the death of their son Sergt. W. Allchurch. He was 34 years old, joined the Army three weeks after war was declared and won the Military Medal four months ago. A letter from the sister in charge of a Casualty Clearing Station in France, says:- “He was admitted here on the evening of the 9th, very ill indeed with a wound in the back, and a severe abdominal wound with internal injury. Everything possible was done for him, but he passed away at 7:15am on the 10th. He did not realise how ill he really was, but he knew I intended writing to you, and sent his love”.


Family are not on BCC but I can provide details for inclusion if required.
