I worked in the Hypo department in 1965 for a time and the fellow in the first photograph standing by the "Dog" was the "Dogger-up" assistant to the Tube Drawer, the fellow putting the tube through the die.
Those tubes would get really hot and the dogger-up's job was to catch them when they were fully drawn. Now and again they'd snap and flash through the air.I've gone home with my arms covered in weals from the hot tubes. All this just to play for The Colts.
The photo indicates one of the larger tube mills we,in the Hypo department, were responsible for the smaller tubes.
My mother was a gas welder there before i came along and a lot of my family were employed at Accles's.
The sender of the photograph lived in Portway Road i believe.
