Hi,

I am trying to discover who my my Nan's father was. My late Nan would never say who her Father was but would only say that he was not a nice man. What I do know is that her Mother never married but had 7 children over a 20 year period (1914,1917,1918,1921,1923,1929,1934). Only one is currently alive (born 1934) but he does not know either so presumably the father left/died when he was too young to remember him. I have the birth certificates of 3 of the children but none show the father. I have ordered 3 others but do not hold much hope. None of the children were baptised so Parish records are of no use. The 1911 census shows her Mother as single and working as a servant. Two other people are listed; the head/employer (female) and her nephew. Perhaps this is the Father-to-be but clutching at straws. Basically I am stumped as to where I can look next. Any suggestions?

If your Gt Grandfather is not recorded on any of the children's birth certificate's you could try all their marriage certificates, other then all fingers crossed he may be with his family when the next Census returns are released in 7 or 8 years time. I would imagine he was probably married to someone else? Did the children all have the same surname as their mother?

you could cross reference the birth certificate address with the electrol register list for the birth years to see if any males are living at the addresses and he might show up on one or more this will give you somewhere to start ?
