The Shambles was the Medievil name for an open air Slaughter House. Don't know where abouts it was in Rowley, have you tried one of the Trade Directories?

Linell.

I think The Shambles was in the vicinity of the present day roundabout opposite Blackheath Market.

:o That's Blackheath Market!!
What's that got to do with The Shambles? Although i think The Shambles was across the road but the area was different then. There was a pub on what is now the traffic island and opposite this pub was,i think,The Shambles.

That's a good photo Gardner.
If you compare that with present day Blackheath The Shambles would be i think,it's difficult. The Handel pub ,which i remember,is there as well. The Shoulder of Mutton, which is still there, was on the opposite corner to The Handel but thats not The Shoulder of Mutton on the photo,or is it?
I think they knocked all the houses on the right hand side down to build the traffic island with underground toilets.
So the present day Blackheath Market would be more or less opposite to where The Shambles was located,
What's the point of all this?
Oh yeah Heeeeleen wanted to know. 8)
