Hi all,
have hit the hardest brick wall around ! ha ha.
Sent off for a death cert for James Nock b: abt 1790 (could be earlier 1777 maybe according to IGI ) / d: between 1839 and 1845 (he is listed on marriage of his daughter Ann Maria Nock in 1839 and as deceased on the marriage cert of his son Thomas in 1845 - In 1841 his children are spread out living with each other)
Got a reply back today from Dudley Reg Service (really nice people by the way) and the record I requested has James Nock as a child :( .
Northern Lass kindly did some digging for me previously and came up with the following : -

James is not down as deceased on the 1839 one I am pretty sure.
Then in 1841 the boys are with their sister
in 1845 he is deffo deceased on that marriage for Thomas
So just had a quick look at the RR book
1840- James nock aged 21 dies - so too young
1842- 3 and half yr old
1844- 4 mth old
1845 should be 2 deaths found an age 3yr old but no burial for another one

here are the actual regis deaths
but you really need to contact the death cert office and say you want a death cert James nock but born abt 1790...and they will if you ask do a sweep 2 yrs either side of a year

Any suggestion where I look now or is it the case that this record may be lost ?

Kind Regards

Hi Simon it wasn't law to register Births and Deaths before 1872 (approx.) I would think that is why you cannot find James's Death Certficate, the family probably did not register his death, there should be a Burial in one of the Church Register's, but not all those have survived. HTH from Linell.

Hate to be discouraging but it wasn't always noted on a marriage certificate that the father was dead. I have several that happened after the father's death and they just list his name. THis means he could have died before registration started.
Do you know what church his children were baptised in, or his daughter married in, or his wife was buried from? If you have a likely church, start and go backwards from 1845 when you definately know he was dead.
Look at the parish lookup helps elsewhere on this site as someone may have access to those records and be able to check for you

Hi Marie,
many thanks for your e-mail. James nock was married to Ann ???? but I have no idea when she died or where she is buried. I know that their children were Christened at St Thomas, Dudley - starting with Ann Maria in 1815.
Will do some more digging working back from 1845 as you have suggested. Want to crack this one because its sending me loopy ! haha

Thanks

Hi all,
is it worth spending a few quid on St Giles Parish Records to see if James Nock's burial is listed ?

I've had a look at the burials at St Giles and have probably found all but one of those dates supplied. Think we can eliminate the following:

James Nock aged 21 from Reddall Hill 21 May 1840
Aged 5yr 7mths buried 13 Nov 1842
Aged 4mths bur 13 Oct 1844
Aged 3yrs bur 9 Mar 1845

I couldn't find bur for the other entry in 1845. Maybe he was buried at another church.

Hi Nocky have you approached the registry office at Sandwell or Dudley and ask them to search for you 2 years either side of a date of death and say you only want it it the person is approx such and such an age
Cos they are very very good

Hi ya NL,
sent off for a death cert last week (Dudley) for JAMES NOCK and received a very nice letter back stating the James Nock I had requested was in fact a child, they refunded my £7 too which was good. Will phone Sandwell reg office tomorrow and ask them to do a scan for James Nock aged approx 50 at death.
I have looked at the IGI for James Nock and have found quite a few records, wish my surname wasn't so bloomin common HAHA !

Hi Nocky you would need to get the death certif
there might be one on the St Giles RR records but think I gave you that info

anyone got the disc handy or book handy to check this 1840 death for a James Nock

then again might be another James Nock buried elsewhere

James Nock aged 21 from Reddall Hill 21 May 1840

This is the one I can see on the RR disc around 1840, died of decline (whatever that is??)

Thanks Guys, not the right one i'm afraid. Thanks for looking though.

NL - you were right you had found that one for me before

I guess i'm gonna have to go check the records for all of the local churches around Rowley,Tipton, Dudley.
Would it be better to go to the Staffs Register office ? They would have all of the records together wouldn't they ?

Hi Simon

Dudley churches are at Dudley archives
Tipton and Rowley are at Smethwick library aka Sandwell archives
not sure on what is at Staffs think Rowley is not sure on Tipton being there

but Nocky there are loads of churches!
