Hi,

I found on the England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966 Record :

James Batty of the Haden Cross Inn, 169 Haden Hill, Old Hill, Staffordshire died 6 March 1927. Probate London 13 April to Esther Batty spinster and Alfred Batty fittings striker effects £533 12s 8d.

I suspect the James mentioned may well be the son of James Batty & Rosannah Parkes that we have researched on previous posts but I've been unable to trace any record of James being landlord of the Haden Cross Inn on census returns or trade directories. I did find James Batty landlord of the Gate that hangs well in the 1888 Kelly's Directory of Staffordshire (maybe the father ?).

I know from the death entry below that James who was the landlord of the Haden Cross Inn was born abt 1869. The son of James Batty & Rosannah Parkes was born abt 1868 but I can only find him listed on the 1871 and 1881 census returns:

1871 census
Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 2994; Folio: 60; Page: 58; GSU roll: 838872.

1881 census
Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 2861; Folio: 12; Page: 18; GSU roll: 1341686.

England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2006
Birth, Marriage & Death
Name:
James Batty
Birth:
abt 1869
Death:
Mar 1927 -Dudley, Staffordshire, England

I just can not find any information on James after 1881 and I hope someone can find further information on James or/and the Haden Cross Inn.

Many thanks
Adrian

Hi,

Yes I also thought of that Peter maybe some military service which may explain why I can't find him on the 1891, 1900 census but difficult to confirm due to missing miltary documents and Interestingly his youngest brother Harry did serve in the military (I've found his service records).

I forgot to mention the two execs' of his will mentioned Esther Batty and Alfred Batty most likely were the children of his brother Samuel and given no wife or children mentioned may well indicate he was in the military etc.

I've tried to find the Haden Cross Inn on census returns but with no luck and I've also attempted to find out names of Landlords from the net but again with no luck.

He left £500 which seems a fair amount for the time so it looks like he did ok at the pub.

Regards
Adrian

That is the Pub, I have been there many moons ago, just down the road from the Rose and Crown which was run by the Hingley family at some point, the road was Halesowen Road, ran between Halesowen and Old HIll.

This must be the right guy and explains why I was unable to locate him on the census returns after 1881. I think I've also found him leaving the UK back to Australia:

Name:
Mr James Batty

Gender:
Male

Age:
57

Birth Date:
abt 1868

Departure Date:
11 Sep 1925

Port of Departure:
London, England

Destination Port:
Melbourne, Australia

Ship Name:
Diogenes

Search Ship Database:
Search the 'Diogenes' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database

Shipping Line:
The Aberdeen Line

Official Number:
144814

Master:
A D Young

The date of birth and profession of plumber matches but he gives last place stayed 45 Temple Drive, Castleford, Yorkshire which is strange.

Hold that thought we can confirm 100% that this James is the same one mentioned becasue I've found on the 1911 census living at 45 Temple Drive, Castleford, Yorkshire Jame's' eldest brother George Batty.

Well done Jimmy

The problem is how do I go about attempting to trace his life in Australia ????

I'm wondering if James was actually the Landlord of the Haden Cross given he was in Australia pre 1925 and maybe he was a lodger at the pub when he died ??? I need to find out the names of the Landlords so I'll start by emailing the pub as advised.

Great work team this is a real result for me after so long searching for James.

James's other brother Thomas born abt 1863 was also missing after the 1881 census so could it have been possible he also went to Australia.

Many thanks
Adrian
