Hello all,
I apologise for not being on in a while, i have been a busy gasman through the winter, and my research has suffered because of this.
I am awaiting for some DNA results to come back to me, as i have taken part in the KENDALL family association Y-DNA test, which should hopefully match me with living Kendall's across the globe, but until these results are returned, i have been concentrating on my Nan's maiden name, CHATER.
I am trying to locate THOMAS CHATER'S Birth certificate. THOMAS was born circa 1865 in Dudley, but the closest match to a THOMAS CHATER is in Sedgley in 1866, but this does'nt tie up with the census records. THOMAS has taken on his mother's surname, and his mother is listed as widowed in the 1881 census, and un-married in the 1871 census. I cannot find a marriage record for a HANNAH CHATER ABT 1843, or a record for the father.
Can anyone help with this one? Any information or help would be appreciated.

Hannah Chater? cannot find on 1861 census, must be married, but cannot find record?

I was wondering if Thomas has his father's surnname for a year or so, until his father passed away, or moved away? Bit of a mystery at the moment. My Mrs takes the mickey out of me for having Gypsey Blood or Romano Blood lol.....

Thanks that's very helpful, looks like Thomas was illegitimate, son of Hannah Chater. He may not have a birth certificate it wasn't law until 1872. Need to find Hannah in 1861 she may have been in Service?

I have seen this one on freeBMD, and WestMidsBMD, but it seems a little too late for some reason, and it's a Sedgley record i think... but i guess she could have registered him late, as it was'nt the law? If i send for the cert it's gonna cost me a tenner lol. Shall i take the gamble? haha
