I've just received a very disappointing email from GRO saying they can't trace a 1971 death certificate despite me supplying them with all the correct (double checked) info.
Why is this?

Hi Peterd
Do you want me to send you a private email with the details of the death certificate I am hoping to get?
Cheers
David

HI VH how about just ringing up both those regis offices and asking them which one would cover the area ...and give them the Volume and ref number they may be able to tell you from that vol no which one covers which. I know Birmingham issue info on which areas they cover in that way ie 6b etc.
Also give them the info you want ie name of person and details and they will let you know if they have it or not.
Some regis offices though have their own way of classifying so the vol no may not help
but worth asking.

Sometimes "too" much information is not a good idea. My mothers birth is recorded on the index as Chaylor, not as Chaytor. If I applied using her correct surname I wouldnt get it!
Ashford Kent has 5f for volume number in that time scale. I couldnt see for another area but read this,
