Looking for Stephen St Rochdale and date for Hereford St

I've traced some of my relatives and they lived at Stephen St, Rochdale, but this no longer exists. I've found mention of it in documents up to 1942 but no street maps of any age which show it. My ancestors were there in 1871. Does anyone know where this street was or any suggestions for finding it?

I'm also interested in checking the age of houses in Hereford St, Rochdale where my ancestors also lived. The street still exists but using Google streetview I'm wondering if the houses were replaced at some point (my ancestors were there in 1891). I'm no expert on dating houses but the current ones look more 20th century than 19th. Are there any house experts that could date the existing houses?

Many Thanks.

Good place to start is the enumerator's description of the district that includes Stephen St.

In 1911 the boundary of the enumeration district is, "Commencing junction of Manchester Road and Tweedale Street along middle of Manchester Road to St. Albans Street, thence along Ecclesiastical Parish of St. Albans Boundary to its junction with Tweedale Street, thence along middle of Tweedale Street to Manchester Road to point started from."

The enumerators then wrote down the streets and buildings they visited.

This really gives no clues except to say he did both sides of Stephen Street. (Sometimes they only do the odds or evens or up to a particular number).

I have some old Lancashire maps so I will look in the boundary described and see if I an find it.

Click enlarge map, then click on the map to enlarge again its on the left half way up.

That's great, thanks very much!

The street is gone now, built over with flats. Funny though, some of the access roads don't have names. Anyway no matter, thanks again.
