I spent many many many weekends at gold gold fields with my metal detector.
Found a few small nuggets, lots of old coins and enough horseshoes and nails to start my own farrier business.
Best thing I ever found was a fob watch given to some bloke on his 21st birthday in 1872.
That was in the early 1990's and I spent months tracking down relatives of the original owner.
The new, but very expensive detectors, have a different way of differentiating ferrous and non ferrous metals.
In the old days I would have to tune the detector and listen for subtle change in its tone.
With the new technology the accuracy is far better and you can penetrate deeper.
So if you can afford the investment it is worth going over the same ground that hundreds of detectorists have scanned before.
Hence you get nuggets like this found near Ballarat last week.
$300,000 in Gold but worth a lot more if a Casino or similar want the nugget for display.
