Hi

I hope that you can help me with this 2013 brick wall. Oh! lang may yer lum reek, btw.

Thomas Quinlan was born Dublin c1822 arrives in Manchester between 1841 & 1845. I know this as my Great, Great (GG) Grandfather Quinlan does not appear in the 1841 census returns for England but he marries Mary Rathmill (Maiden Surname Hamblett) in Manchester in 1845. I have tried to find GG Grandfather TQ in Ireland prior to that but unfortunately the records are sparse and so far unproductive. His death certificate in Manchester reveals that his father was Joseph Quinlan a Silversmith. No trace of JQ in England.

The family story was that TQ & MH had to get out of Ireland as the church / priests were after them. You can see how that story developed but there is no evidence (or likelihood) of MH having been in Ireland.

Mary Quinlan previously Rathmill (MS Hamblett) brought four children to the marriage. These are Theophilus, Ann, Edward & Joseph (Ages 16 to 9). Mary is c11 years older than TQ. She was born in Warrington in c1811 to a John Hamblett and a wife named Sarah. I know nothing about John & Sarah other than John would have been born c1790 probably in Warrington. There is a possibility that Sarah"™s surname is Lloyd. My brick wall is confirming MH parents or suggesting a route that I should follow to get beyond this stage.

Kind regards

Mactavish

Hi
So this is Mary's first marriage (FamilySearch)

groom's name: Robert Rathmell
bride's name: Mary Hamblett
marriage date: 03 Aug 1829
marriage place: Warrington,Lancashire,England
indexing project (batch) number: M00797-8
system origin: England-ODM
source film number: 1468988

and this the second

groom's name: Thomas Quinlan
bride's name: Mary Hamblet Or Rathmill
marriage date: 13 Dec 1845
marriage place: Cathedral,Manchester,Lancashire,England
indexing project (batch) number: M09789-1
system origin: England-ODM
source film number: 438203, 438204, 438205, 438206, 438207

Have you the certificate for the second marriage? Does it give her father's occupation? Is he deceased or not. Who were the witnesses?

If you can get a look at the first marriage it would be good to know the witnesses for that as well.

First marriage witnesses not much help

Marriage: 3 Aug 1829 St Elphin, Warrington, Lancashire, England
Robert Rathmell - (X), of This Parish
Mary Hamblett - (X), of This Parish
Witness: John Cross, (X); William Webster
Married by Banns by: Thos. Lowe Curate
Register: Marriages 1824 - 1833, Page 343, Entry 129
Source: LDS Film 1562961

There are a lot of Hamblett marraiges/witnesses to marriages. You might be able to work out some connections within the family from them.

Baptism: 8 Dec 1811 St Elphin, Warrington, Lancashire, England
Mary Hamblett - Daur of John Hamblett & Sarah
Occupation: Smith
Register: Baptisms 1781 - 1812, Page 351, Entry 12551
Source: LDS Film 1562957

Perhaps if you look around then you can find other children for the couple and so work back to a likely marriage?

Thank you for the help so far. I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you but I've been working.

I think the first marriage quoted is correct but I don't have the certificate.

The second marriage 13/12/1845 at The Coll & Parish Church of Manchester.
Thomas Quinlan and Mary (X) Rathmill.
Witnesses - Henry Boorman & Matilda (X) Stocks.

Her father is recorded a Joseph Hamblet, Farmer. (I'm thinking that this could be wrong as Joseph is the first name of the grooms father, but who knows)

Back to the drawing board!

I've had a quick look at LDS but there is not a Mary born to a father Joseph in Warrington either Hamblet or Hamblett. I also noted that there is a Joseph in the Hamblett family, a brother b1821 of Mary.

Warrington is the place of birth of Mary and the year of birth is either 1810 or 1811 per census returns

Don't you just love this game.
