Here is what I think I know:
I have an ancestor, born in France as a British Subject. I know her first name was Louis or Louise, but i have no idea about her surname. I also know she was born in the 1860s, and her husband was Thomas Bellis. I have found them on the 1881 census. but no matter where I look, I cannot find a record of the marriage, or her surname or birth year.
Is there anybody hear who could point me in the right direction?

hae you found them on the 1911 census should tell you how long married this will give you some idea where to start

her husband died in 1901, would it still show on the 1911 census?

? Thomas is still alive in 1911 and it says married 34 years.

You could get a birth certificate for one of the children, that should give you her maiden name.

The Thomas Bellis who died in 1901 lived in Prince's Street in Shildon.

He is NOT the one who married Louisa.

Your Thomas was living in Woodside, Jenkins Row, Escomb, Witton.

He dies in 1923.

According to several tree Louisa is Louisa Lacoste (or Lecoste).

Trying to verify that for you.....

I assume they got the name Lacoste from a birth record.

There is a Freed Lacoste in Durham in the 1911 who may be related.

You may have to get a certificate to confirm her name.
