Hello, I am really hoping someone may be able to help me with this one. I am doing a family tree for my son in laws father and on his fathers side have come across nothing but brick walls!

Luther Edgar Wade (known as Edgar) was born in 1916 in Middleton Lancashire. His birth certificate states that his fathers name was Luther Henry WADE and mother Amy Alice HINCHCLIFFE. Luther(jnr) had 2 older brothers Jack and Fred and a younger sister (name unknown) who died before the age of 10. Luther (Jnr) went into a home called Boundary Park at the age of 10 (so about 1926). Thats it...I can find nothing else.

No birth marriage or death for Luther (Snr) or Amy (as WADE or HINCHCLIFFE) and no census records for any year either with them together or apart! Despite trying every spelling variation known to mankind and searching nationally in case they simply moved - I can find nothing at all about either of them or their children Jack, Fred and unknown female although I did find a Richard WADE (mother HINCHCLIFFE) who died as an infant in 1918.

Just to add to the headache, I can find no record of a home called Boundary Park!

I am hoping that one of you out there may have heard of it or anyone in this elusive family!

Perhaps there was a children's home there before the hospital?

This could be Frank's* birth? And Luther jnr which you have, then a Richard who died an infant?

Just looking at the parish register for the Banns and Marriage.

Amy Naylor was a 25 year old spinster. Father Edward John Naylor. A baker.

Luther Edgar Wade was a 24 year old bachelor. Father Henry Wade (deceased). A Grocer.

Could Amy Alice have remarried in 1926 and dumped the kids into a home?

Gardener, I did wonder if 'childrens home' may have meant workhouse so I shall follow that up and, although I was not looking for a Frank the coincidence of the mothers maiden name may be worth further dig!

MarkCDodd, I had noted the marriage of the Amy Naylor and Luther and wondered myself if she may have been married before but your information from the parish registers seems to discount that (unless she fibbed and was not a spinster) but the remarriage of an Amy A to Ernest Pearce and dumping the children (at least Luther Jnr.) sounds rather plausible, I shall dig into that one a bit more - Thank you

Does the birth certificate give an address? And does it have an occupation for the father?

The Birth certificate gives the address as 31 Assheton Street, Middleton and the fathers occupation as Driver Royal Field Artillery (Outdoor Labourer). I am assuming the occupation in brackets is his peacetime job.

That address in 1911 is inhabited by Wrights and Wriggleys.

I have found the following which may be of asstance regarding Boundary Park. I have alos listed another link which might be of use.

From 1915, the workhouse was renamed Westwood Park Poor Law Institution. Following the inauguration on the National Health Service in 1948, the former workhouse infirmary at the north of the site became Boundary Park General Hospital. The rest of the buildings were renamed Boundary Park General Hospital Annexe, specialised in providing geriatric and psychiatric care. An Oldham County Borough Directory of 1956 lists Boundary Park Hospital as having 390 beds, and the Annexe as having 600. However, the establishment of the modern Welfare State meant that there was less need for the services provided by the Annexe and greater need for more hospital beds. When the last forty old men and women left the Annexe in 1957 for residential care, they were seen as the last 'inmates' of the old workhouse.
