Helloooo - been working on my Channel Islands family for past few months so I've not been around much lately.... but... I have located the headstone for my 4x great grandfather Zeri Shaw this man here on BCC ... http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/fa ... haw-Family
The headstone is in St Lukes Churchyard, Cradley Heath and the inscription has revealed ages, dates of death and .... a second wife!!!

The inscription reads -
In memory of Matilda (Homer) wife of Zeri Shaw who departed this life January 3rd 1858 aged 52 years
Also of Sarah (Warren), second wife of the above Zeri Shaw who departed this life August 26th 1870 aged 54 years
Also of the above Zeri Shaw who departed this life January 8th 1892 aged 85 years.

Zeri has been very difficult to trace as he is variously transcribed and recorded as Zerah, Zarai, Zara, Levi and even Berri and Geri !!!! So at least the headstone confirms that he was actually Zeri, which is also how his name was spelt in the Rowley Regis Parish Register for baptisms in 1807.

He was baptised at St Giles, Rowley Regis on 20 September 1807
Married to Matilda Homer at St Mary's Oldswinford on 14 October 1832
Married to his second wife Sarah warren in October quarter 1862,

On 1871 census he is living in High Street, Reddal Hill with his daughter Mary Ann
On 1881 census he is recorded in St Werburgh's, Derbyshire living with Mary Ann and her husband Samuel Northwood.
On 1891 census he is living at 32 Church Road, Netherton ( only a few hundred yards from where I grew up) with his daughter Elizabeth and her husband James Hodgkiss.

The headstone gives us the date of death for Matilda Homer too January 3rd 1858 aged 52, meaning she was born 1806 and baptised 1807 http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/fa ... mer-Family

Matilda was baptised Dec 6 1807, which means she was probably born that year. Her brother Absalom was baptised 16.11.1806.

Makes sense - I guess the finer details on headstones are only taken from what people tell the stonemason in the first place. My own grandfather didn't know his real birth date and used to take a guess at his real age

Yes absolutely, think a lot of them didn't know just how old they were, even I have to stop and think sometimes!
