Morning guys,

I have a marriage certificate from someone in the family ( John Joseph Woodman) . The marriage certificate lists Joseph Woodman and Alice Woodman ( Airton ) as his parents. but looking on the census (1851) he is listed as a nephew. which one is correct?

The family are also there in 1841

Overton Lancashire
Joseph Woodman 45 Labourer
Alice Woodman 40
Alice Woodman 12
John Woodman 18
William Woodman 5
Agnes Woodman 2

Other Woodmans on the same page:-

Alice Woodman abt 1761 Lancashire, England
John Woodman abt 1786 Lancashire, England Lancaster, Lancashire
Mary Woodman abt 1791 Lancashire, England Lancaster, Lancashire
James Woodman abt 1819 Lancashire, England Lancaster, Lancashire
Joseph Woodman abt 1820 Lancashire, England Lancaster, Lancashire
Mary Woodman abt 1838 Lancashire, England Lancaster, Lancashire
Joseph Woodman abt 1796 Lancashire, England Lancaster, Lancashire
Alice Woodman abt 1801 Lancashire, England Lancaster, Lancashire
Alice Woodman abt 1829 Lancashire, England Lancaster, Lancashire

It is impossible for us to say if the reference to John being a Nephew is correct or not, mistakes on the Census were quite common, looks a complete family to me though, the ages of the children all fit, so could be a mistake? I would search the whole of Overton on the Census, looks like there are a lot of Woodmans living there, probably all connect. HTH Linell.

Another question. Its my first time using ancestry.co.uk for searching records. Ive been using scotlandspeople since all family so far have been from scotland. When searching for births of john joseph woodman 1844, it shows this FREEBMD. when clicking on an image it shows the name but a page number and index. I assume this page and index is where the actual details are held. is their a way to find this page?

I LOVE Scottish certificates!

A tree on Ancestry has the image of Joseph Woodman's death certificate. Transcribing, it says:

Joseph Woodman Fisherman (Widower of Margaret Martin) male Age: 77
died 1924 January 28th 11 h. 50 m A.M. Summergate Annan
Cause of Death: Senility As cert by R. Smith L.R.C.P & C

Name and Maiden surname of Mother: Margaret Woodman (Afterwards married to John Rawlinson Fisherman) (deceased)
Informant: Joseph Woodman Son 3 Rosevine, Upper Kenziels, Annan
Reisgtered 1924, Jauary 28th at Annan

Looks like John Joseph may have been illegitimate and that the cause of the discrepancy between the 2 certificates that you have.

The Ancestry tree is the "Woodman/Hawthorne" tree and belongs to "pr0xibus"

Oh,   that's you

There is also a private tree on Ancestry which has information about Margaret Woodman born 1820 in Overton. This has an image of the marriage certificate of Margaret to John Rawlinson. The owner is "christinecsheldon". It might be worth contacting her.
