How do I access 1831 / 1821 / 1811 census's if they are about, I have access to "Ancestry" care of our local library?
I know I can download / register, but it gets me out and down the town. Cheers, Tony.

The 1841 census is the first one to be published anywhere on the internet. There were some census taken before 1841 but they are very few and far between, and you would probably have to visit the local archives to veiw them. I know that Smethwick archives hold a small census for Wednesbury in 1831, but it doesn't hold very much information, even less than the 1841. If you contact the archives for the area you are interested in, they will tell you what they hold.

If I remember rightly, the census pre 1841, was purely statistics, with no names etc, so not much use to genealogists.

I think it depends where the census was taken, it wasn't controlled by the Government. The 1831 census for Wednesbury did contain names and addresses and ages, but no proffessions and it didn't cover the whole of Wednesbury, so was very patchy. It might be worth your while contacting the archives in the area you need to see
