Hi everyone

I have got to the point in my research where I am having to rely on parish records to trace my family in the 1700s.

There are some individuals who I want to take back a generation in the 1700s but have been unable to do so because I don't know which parish records are correct.

The only information I have about them is a name and an approximate date/place of birth. I don't know the names of either of their parents because their marriage records don't reveal this. My problem is that when I search for their baptism on the FamilySearch website I get more than one possible match (all with the same names and approximate date/place of birth).

Has anyone else had the same problem and if so is there any way of finding out which parish record is the correct one?

You need to trace your Ancestors back very carefully John, where did they live and what age were they. Family Search has lists of names which have been sent in by anyone to be frank, they are submissions, you need to ignore them and look for the extracted records from the Parish Register, best put your ancestors on here and let us all have a look.

Any help from anyone with the following will be appreciated.

Two of the individuals I am interested in are John Brown and Catherine Hall who lived in Newcastle upon Tyne and later moved to West Bromwich, Staffordshire. I have not been able to identify each of their parents. This is what I know by looking at original records:

John Brown married Catherine Hall (both of this parish) by banns at All Saints Church, Newcastle upon Tyne on 25th August 1828.
Witnesses: John Hall and Joseph Pearson.

Baptism records for their children John, Isabella, Thomas, William, Clement and George show that the couple were living in Wall Knoll/St Peters Quay, Newcastle upon Tyne between 1829-1840.

and

Community Contributed IGI (Personal family information submitted to the LDS Church)

The top one is the one you need, but it is still advisable to check for your own records. If you don't live in the area, you can ask your local LDS centre to order the film in for you. You can only view it at the centre, but they will keep it there as long as you need it.
