I am trying to put the cardboard in the bag the council provided
and the wine bottles in the green box ...although don't have too many of those...
and recycle the newspapers...lots of those cos I am looking for a job

anyone any more ways to create less household waste
or save money
or save electricity or gas etc etc

Check whether stuff is in recyclable packaging before buying - then put in recycle bins. Have a worm farm for kitchen waste. Stop eating baked beans.

Well if we have to stop eating baked beans let's get rid of all the sheep in Australasia!!

Leave the car at home use a pedal bicycle!!

(am i being serious now?)

You can also put used tea bags, eggshells, looroll and kitchen roll
holders into the compost bin as well, all rot down over the summer

I think that is a sound idea Di about the packaging...so much non bio degradable stuff wrapping our food

nice idea compost heaps but if its not in a proper bin then waste food just is ideal place for rats and mice to thrive ?

but if you have them as pets then the shredded up paper can be used for their bedding!

One of the things that really annoys me in my house is lights being left on or phone plugs being left in
or any lights on at all
and using too much water for anything!
and letting the water run when cleaning teeth
and leaving everything on standby
and not using up all the toothpaste

leaving thing on standby use no electricity at all its aload of rubbish about it using 2/3 of being on as its a switch and it cuts power off to appliance

and as far as lights go these energy saving bulbs dont save any money until they been on for 15 min or more if under that the cost is about the same as a normal light bulb as it needs more energy to light it

Oh that is so true Northern Lassie!
That is sooo like my house!!

Taking showers instead of baths!!
Turning the electric cooker off just before the foods cooked to let the heat on the hobs cook the final 5 minutes!!

Woke up thinking GREEN!!
Rechargeable batteries!!
Plant a tree provide a home for wildlife AND trees absord carbon dioxide!!
How GREEN am i then?

We're seriously short of water in Melbourne at present, so not allowed to do stuff like wash cars at home (have to use commercial car washes which recycle), water gardens (seriously limited!) We have grey water (showers, laundry) diverted onto gardens, put bucket under shower while showering (especially while waiting for hot water to come through) and use that water on the garden, bowl or jug in sink when waiting for hot water for same purpose.

By the way, it rained properly yesterday and today - First time for at least 2 months. It has nearly put the fires out. (Big sigh of relief!)

We're encouraged in summer to not have our air-conditioners going flat out. Only cool to 25C instead of lower. I wish supermarkets would do the same. It's ridiculous to have to put a jacket on to do the shopping when it's 40 degrees outside.

I don't know if they still do the same in the UK with heating, but when I was last there, the shops were way overheated in winter. Crazy to have to rug up to the eyeballs to go outside and then roast in the shops. They could save a lot of energy there!
