ARC TBC - Johnson/Hunt

Have just added parents of Aaron Johnson b 1742 to BCC as I found his baptism. Bit of a puzzle though, as parents names are given as "Joseph and Ann Johnson alias Hunt". At first I wondered whether this was because the parents weren't married and Hunt was Ann's maiden name, but have trawled through RR parish registers and there are Johns(t)on alias Hunt's in RR as far back as 1660. Anyone got any thoughts on this? Maybe they didn't know who they were! I haven't put that the parents were married as I can't find a marriage for them, but will have to do some more looking.

I remember this being asked on RRO years ago....and maybe Kate or Di can remember better than me....but isn't it something to do with the name was interchangeable....there was a reason and I think Di and Kate answered it.....
Its going to drive me mad now not remembering
Sue on RRO asked the question
I will email her

Yes, I remember this coming up and I can't remember what the reason was. Kate? San?

Just read this, thanks Di. Clearly the same family, but would still like to know about the alias, which goes back much further than this.
Anyone else got any ideas?

That's what I thought might be happening. So from about the 1660's to at leats the 1840's some of the family were using the alias.

Yes, in the Rowley Regis Parish Records on Ancestry, sometimes it's Johnson alias Hunt and sometimes Hunt alias Johnson.

Here's a christening that could be relevant. Don't know if it's early enough, though:
Extracted:
EDWARD JONSON:
Christening: 08 FEB 1691 Rowley Regis, Stafford, England
Father: EDWARD JONSON
Mother: MARY HUNT

No, it's not. There are earlier "Johnson or Hunt" christenings. Darn!

And another Johnson/Jonson to Hunt partnership:
ANN JONSON
Christening: 06 MAY 1694 Rowley Regis, Stafford, England
Father: RICHARD JONSON
Mother: ANN HUNT

And a later one:
HANNAH JONSON
Christening: 05 NOV 1728 Rowley Regis, Stafford, England
Father: JOSEPH JONSON
Mother: MARY HUNT
Looks like the Jonsons & Hunts got on well

Looks like this could be a very tangled web - I'm going to try looking further back in the P.R.'s.

Hi Margaret
Can we archive this pending more info or do you want me to move it to brick walls?
Unless otherwise advised this topic will be moved to archived section pending more info

Please could you move it to brick walls? I'm still working on it.
Thanks, Margaret
